A McDonald’s Moving Up Party for Daniel Cabrera

Do you remember Daniel Cabrera?

Four years ago, Daniel Cabrera was known all over the world as the little boy studying on the pavement under a faint light coming from a McDonald’s restaurant. That viral photo has inspired people online for his dedication to doing well in his studies despite difficult circumstances in life.

Torrefranca’s original post featuring Daniel first made its rounds on social media in June 2015 and has been picked up by local and international media shortly after. The post inspired a lot of netizens and brought about outpouring support not only from local organizations but also from the international community.

Since learning about the heartwarming story of Daniel, McDonald’s Philippines, through its charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House of Charities (RMHC), has been supporting him by providing him with his different school needs such as allowance, supplies, and uniform.

After four years, Daniel’s hard work had paid off as he graduated from Subangdaku Elementary School last April. To celebrate Daniel’s achievements, McDonald’s treated him to a moving-up party in its North Reclamation, Cebu—the same branch where Daniel was snapped by Joyce Torrefranca studying.

MEETING DANIEL FOR THE FIRST TIME

When I had a chance to talk to Daniel, I asked him what subject was he studying that night when his photo was taken. He said he was answering his Math assignment (which is his favorite subject). Then we talked some more of their struggles before and how their lives changed after the photo got viral in social media.

I was in awe listening to him and it clearly showed his wisdom at such an early age. I remembered some of the kids from my classes when I used to teach before. I have so much respect for those who tirelessly devote their time to studying even when life is hard for them. In Homeroom class, I’d instill in them to give value to hard work and they will be reaping the fruits of their labor in the end.

Those life’s lessons I taught through the years were nuggets of wisdom from my father when we were struggling before. He’d tell me having less doesn’t mean you’re no longer allowed to have dreams and chase them. I didn’t believe him at first but as I grew up, I slowly understood him.

Daniel’s inspiring story teaches us that poverty is NEVER a hindrance to success. And dreams will only become a reality when you put your heart and soul to it coupled it with hard work and determination.

Be like Daniel. Never give up. BELIEVE!
