“They have stolen the heart from inside you. But this does not define you. This is not who you are. You know who you are.”
Those words from Disney’s Moana echoed far beyond the movie screen last Sunday at SM Seaside Cebu. They perfectly captured not only Moana’s journey but also the inspiring story of Cebuana singer and actress Kai Montinola, who stood before hundreds of fans to perform “Hangganan Ko,” the Filipino version of the beloved Disney anthem “How Far I’ll Go.” (see video)

Sometimes, all it takes is one song to remind us that our greatest adventures begin when we choose courage over fear.
And that’s exactly what Kai did.
The Mountain Wing Atrium of SM Seaside Cebu transformed into a celebration of dreams as Kai was warmly welcomed by her loyal supporters—fondly known as the Kai-Mates—along with members of the Team Kai Fans Club, whose cheers filled the venue long before she stepped onto the stage.
The excitement reached another level the moment Kai began singing “Hangganan Ko.” Every lyric resonated with the audience, not just because it was beautifully translated into Filipino, but because Kai herself embodied the very message behind the song.
Kai shared in one of her previous interviews, why the role meant so much to her.
“My favorite part of Moana’s journey is that she didn’t think she was perfect. She doubted at first, but she chose that fear. She chose to seize that fear, and there she was destined to do greater things.”
Those weren’t just words. They reflected her own story.
As a proud Cebuana, Kai looked back on her humble beginnings with heartfelt honesty. (see video)
“I was just a simple girl here in Cebu. I used to wander around the seaside. I used to hang out with my friends. And now I’m on a journey.”
It was a touching reminder that every dream starts somewhere ordinary.
She also spoke about growing up with limited opportunities, but instead of allowing those circumstances to define her, she chose to pursue the path she truly wanted.
“I wanted to chase my dreams. Therefore, I’m very happy to be here because I chose to chase my dreams and perform in front of all of you.”
It was impossible not to hear the parallels between Kai and Moana.
Both began with uncertainty. Both questioned themselves. Yet both chose to move forward despite the fear.
That is perhaps why “Hangganan Ko” feels so authentic in Kai’s voice. She isn’t simply singing the lyrics—she has lived them.
When asked how she connected with the Filipino adaptation, Kai shared that the translated lyrics made the song even more personal. As a Filipino, she found herself relating to its message on a much deeper level, making every performance feel heartfelt and genuine. Her heartfelt message to her supporters made the afternoon even more memorable.
She invited everyone to experience Disney’s live-action Moana, sharing how emotional it was to revisit a story she first watched as a child nearly ten years ago.
“I remember watching it as a kid. Now I’m watching it as a 19-year-old. You guys will totally enjoy it.”
The audience responded with enthusiastic cheers, clearly excited to experience the beloved story once again on the big screen.
But the celebration didn’t end with Kai’s performance.
The event continued with a lively singing contest where fans showcased their own talents, followed by a much-awaited meet-and-greet that allowed Kai-Mates to personally interact with their idol. Smiles, hugs, selfies, and heartfelt conversations filled the venue as Kai graciously spent time with everyone who came to support her.

To cap off the unforgettable afternoon, Kai-Mates, Kai’s family and friends, members of the media, and social media content creators gathered for an exclusive screening of Disney’s live-action Moana. Watching the film together made the entire experience feel even more meaningful, especially after hearing Kai’s inspiring journey firsthand.
As the credits rolled, one thing became clear.
The story of Moana continues to inspire because it reminds us that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it is choosing to move forward despite it.
For Kai Montinola, that journey began on the shores of Cebu.
Today, her voice carries that message across the country through “Hangganan Ko,” inspiring countless young dreamers to believe that where they come from does not determine where they can go.
After all, as Moana reminds us:
“They have stolen the heart from inside you. But this does not define you. This is not who you are. You know who you are.”
Sometimes, all we need is the courage to answer the call.
