Cebu Now Na Movement Launches at SM Seaside Skyhall, Urges Action on Pressing Issues

The “Cebu Now Na” Movement, a socio-political initiative aimed at addressing the urgent issues facing Cebu City, was officially launched on September 17, 2024, at SM Seaside Skyhall. Spearheaded by organizer Mike Quejada, the movement calls on Cebuanos, particularly the youth, to actively engage in creating solutions for the city’s long-standing challenges.

In his opening remarks, Quejada emphasized that the movement is not just about recognizing Cebu’s problems but about inspiring action. He underscored the importance of youth participation, noting that while Cebu faces many difficulties, a widespread sense of resignation has often paralyzed progress. “The hope of the people is not enough,” he stated, calling for immediate, collective action to confront these issues head-on.

Anthem for Change

As part of the official launch of the Cebu Now Na Movement, the organizers also unveiled the movement song expressing frustration over Cebu’s ongoing issues like pollution and traffic. The lyrics reflect how these problems have persisted for decades, with little improvement.

The song calls for action, encouraging everyone to come together and create real change for the city. It aims to inspire Cebuanos to take responsibility and tackle these challenges as a united community.

Key Leaders Lend Their Support

The launch event was attended by prominent figures such as Acting Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, Atty. Jose “Joey” Daluz, III, and Basak Pardo Barangay Captain Dave Tumulak. In his speech, Acting Cebu City Mayor Garcia acknowledged the concerns of the youth, particularly regarding recurring issues like flooding and improper waste disposal. He stressed that no single group can solve these problems alone and urged unity among Cebuanos to bring about real change. “We have to do it now. Cebu, now na!” the mayor declared, calling for a shared vision of a better Cebu.

Solidarity and Engagement Activities

Before the official launch, attendees were invited to express their concerns and hopes for the city on a “solidarity wall.” A large Cebu map was also displayed, where participants could place their thumbmarks, representing their commitment to the movement’s cause. This symbolic gesture aimed to foster a sense of belonging and responsibility among Cebuanos to actively work towards positive change.

During the event, social media influencer, comedian, and artist Zeke Abella engaged the audience, particularly the youth, by asking what issues in Cebu needed immediate attention. Many voiced frustration over the lack of tangible solutions from local officials, calling for decisive action instead of empty promises.

Music as a Unifying Force

The launch concluded with a rock concert featuring performances from well-known performers such as Sunkissed Lola, Cookie$, and Acel Band. The music helped energize the crowd, reinforcing the movement’s message that change, much like music, requires harmony and collective effort.

The Cebu Now Na Movement is more than just a call to action; it’s a rallying cry for Cebuanos to unite and tackle the city’s most pressing issues. With support from local leaders and a growing number of youth advocates, the movement hopes to turn words into concrete actions that will shape a better future for Cebu City.
