Preparations underway for Sinulog 2020

The Sinulog Governing Board (SGB) is making headway in pre-production for Sinulog 2020.

The board took its first step by identifying areas of improvement — streamline mechanics of performances particularly the mardi gras, zone viewing decks and selling stalls to improve foot traffic, and create targeted side events to expand the festival’s entertainment factor.

At the press talk with some of the Sinulog Governing Board members (from L-R): Cebu’s famous choreographer Val Sandiego, Cebu City Sinulog Governing Board (CCSGB) executive director Barney Borja, and award-winning Cebuano industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue

The board sees the need to create a revitalized image of the festival to provide renewed appeal to its target markets — primarily 38-50 years old and, secondarily, 22-37 years old living in Manila, Cebu, and its surrounding islands. Existing foreign markets such as the Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese are also part of its target market.

They will keep the activities as practiced in the previous Sinulog celebration and even added Sinulog sa Palaboy and a vlogging contest. The board promises more fun and event-filled Sinulog that is relevant to all ages but still keeping church traditions alive. Ruel Paz, a well-respected director of ABS-CBN shows abroad has been enlisted as director and consultant of the mardi gras.

The board ensures a well-coordinated installment of the festival as it carries vital agencies under its wing including the Sinulog Foundation, Inc. (SFI), Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Education (DepEd), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Department of Health (DOH), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella issued the executive order last August 23 which created the Sinulog Governing Board of which he is the chairman, primarily to organize and oversee the Sinulog festival. SGB will serve as the regulatory board that will oversee SFI and its executive committee, and has the right to review and approve all resolutions and actions of the SFI’s executive committee.
